Chipunga Water Project
Divine Relief Aid Outreach constructed a water pipeline for the Chipunga Community, TA Chapinduka, Tcharo, Rumphi District, to maximise health benefits and reduce morbidity, waterborne diseases, and poverty in the identified communities.
The 2,500-meter pipeline supports 3,000 beneficiaries and is funded by the US Embassy and CTCT.
Chipunga village is an isolated, remote area in Rumphi East, Malawi. People can only reach it by boat; there is no road network. Some people in the area have never seen a car, not even a bicycle. The people drink water from contaminated shallow wells and the lake. get involved
The intervention
The project constructed 2.5 km of water pipeline, installed 10,000-litre water storage tanks, and provided 15 water stations/kiosks for rural communities. It established a sustainable model for improving access to safe drinking water through a community-based water management system. DRAOO, in consultation with the Water Engineer and the District Water and Sanitation Team, adopted Pipe Born Water Technology (PBWT), which the District Water and Sanitation Team of the Assembly, the local authority for the project area, highly recommended.
